Girls on the Run is an afterschool program that helps preteen girls develop self-confidence and healthy attitudes.  Through active games, running, and group discussion, girls learn about healthy choices, positive body image, healthy eating, and supportive relationships.  The girls complete the 12-week program with a stronger sense of identity, greater self-confidence, a healthier body image and a better understanding of what it means to be a member of a team and a community. Training in running/walking is built into every lesson, leading up to a 5K Fun Run that gives the girls a chance to be cheered on by the community and to gain confidence in their strength and fitness.   Each team of 12 girls meets two times a week after school. At least two trained coaches are in charge of each group at all times.

GIRLS ON THE RUN INTERNATIONAL

Girls on the Run® councils at more than 180 locations across the United States and Canada serve girls in their local communities under the umbrella of our parent organization, Girls on the Run International.   In the 2010-2011 school year, almost 100,000 girls participated in Girls on the Run or Girls on Track. Molly Barker started the first Girls on the Run group in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1996.  Molly began running as a girl, and often went for a run with her mom. Before starting Girls on the Run , she was a high school teacher and track coach, and also worked as a counselor addressing the needs of women with eating disorders, alcohol and substance addictions and depression. She later became a four-time Hawaii Ironman tri-athlete and earned a Masters in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.   Click here to learn more about Girls on the Run International.
